Odds calculation and prize division
The Powerball lottery game was the first to employ two separate drums in drawing the winning lottery numbers. To win the lottery players must select five main numbers from 1 to 59 and another Powerball number from 1 to 39. The five main numbers are drawn from one drum and the Powerball number is drawn from the additional drum. This two drum system was put in place by Steve Caputo of the Oregon Lottery, and by doing so has increased the odds of winning the jackpot and lowered the odds for the other prize levels.
Powerball Prize Divisions
In total there are nine prize levels in Powerball, giving players nine ways to win the lottery.
