US Lotteries began in the early 1800s when there were several patents granted on new types of lottery games. These patented systems are still considered to be viable business methods, even today. Interstate lottery is also known as multistate lottery or multistate game. There were many illegal lotteries running in the United States long before the start of the state run lotteries. In 1964, New Hampshire started the first modern state run lottery in the US. Today, state lotteries are thriving all across the United States, including in 42 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, as well as the US Virgin Islands. In addition, Arkansas approved a lottery for that state in the General Election of 2008.

The first interstate USA lottery was established in 1985 and included the states of New Hampshire, Maine, and Vermont. The Multi-State Lottery Association was established in 1988 with member states that included Oregon, Iowa, Kansas, Rhode Island, West Virginia, Missouri, and the District of Columbia. This established what is known as the Powerball lottery, which is specifically designed to accumulate large amounts of money for its jackpot payouts. In 1996, the Big Game Lottery was established, which later became known as Mega Millions lottery.
The first states to sponsor this lottery were Georgia, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, and Virginia, but additional states joined later. Now the states of New Jersey, New York and Ohio, Washington, Texas, and California also participate in the Mega Millions Lottery.
The North American Association of State and Provincial Lotteries (NASPL) established in 1971. It has started of as a mean of informal exchange of information between 3 pioneering lottery directors. Today, the organization is an active non-profit professional association who represents 52 other lottery organizations.
