Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation

The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLGC) often known as OLG is the jurisdictional lottery corporation for the province of Ontario, Canada. Under its jurisdiction are not only the lottery games but also a variety of gambling related games including Aboriginal casinos, commercial casinos, and slot machines at horseracing tracks. Besides these the OLGC's agenda includes beneficial programs and charity.

The first lottery game offered by OLG was the Wintario. It was launched on May 15, 1975 and was canceled in 1996. Throughout its running time OLG dispensed more then .1 Billion prize money. Wintario was the flag lottery game of OLG and was known also as "The People's Lottery". Currently the main national lottery games offered by OLG are Lotto 6/49 and Lotto Max and Lottario as a regional game.

OLG was founded on April 1st, 2000 as a result of a merger between the Ontario Casino Corporation (OCC) and the Ontario Lottery Corporation (OLC). Currently OLG is employing over 8000 people throughout the Ontario Province. Its headquarters are located in Sault Ste. Marie while the prize center is in Toronto.

The Ontario province regulations divided the responsibility over the gaming services between 2 different organizations. OLG is the operator of different gaming services such as lottery whereas AGCO (the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario) is overseeing casino gaming. OLG's Board of Directors is supervised and reports to the Minister of Public Infrastructure Renewal.

OLG Structure

OLG is divided into 4 divisions: The Lotto division, the casinos division, the slots division and the E-bingo division.

The Lotto division operates 9 different lottery games throughout Ontario and additional Lotto Advance add-on to the national Lotto 6/49. Lotto Max and Lotto 6/49 are also offered by OLG though the Interprovincial Lottery Corporation in fact operates them. Various instant scratch card games, under the brand name Instant Games, are also available in the Lottery division. Pro-Line, Point-Spread and Pro-Picks are the brand names for the sports games, also marketed under the Lottery division.

The Casino division own 10 casinos that has partly private operators. Among the OLG casinos are: OLG Casino Brantford, Casino Niagara, Casino Rama, OLG Casino Sault Ste. Marie and OLG Casino Thousand Islands. Across Ontario there are 17 racetracks with slot machines on their premises all under the supervision of the slot machines division. The most famous ones include Ajax Downs, Clinton Raceway, Fort Erie Race Track, Georgian Downs and Kawartha Downs. The E-bingo division maintains E-bingo centers at Barrie, Peterborough, Kingston and Sudbury. In some cases all 4 locations are connected in order to form one big game.

Community activity and involvement

OLG produces an annual of .7 billion in Ontario in economic activity. OLG contributes back to the society through various programs. The Ontario Trillium Foundation distributes revenues to charities Ontario wide. The Quest for Fold program supports amateur athletes. Revenues are also given to different health related programs and hospitals.

Part of OLG's agenda is the support for the local economy. As an organization it is committed to purchase goods and use local services. OLG pays the salaries of 7,700 local employees as well as the salary of 11,400 casino resorts employees. Additional fees are paid to the local municipalities, on which the various gaming facilities are built. OLG also pays to the horse racing industry in Ontario.

OLG is also committed to educate, research, treat and prevent the gambling problem, all as part of its corporate responsibility. In that spirit OLG sponsors local and communal music events as well as a variety of charities.
