Midwest Millions

On September 7th, 2007 a new scratch card lottery game was launched by the states of Kansas Lottery and Iowa Lottery, both members in the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL). This instant scratch card game was introduced initially at the State Fair in Hutchinson Kansas and later in Iowa. Each state was permitted to sell 600,000 cards.

The prizes won from the instant scratch cards varied from up to 1,000. Non-Winning scratch cards are entitled to participate in the second chance drawings with a 0,000 grand prize and 5 more 10,000 prizes. The first drawing series featured only 2 drawings, both with a grand prize of 50,000. The first drawing took place in Topeka, Kansas on January 2008 and was followed by a second drawing in Iowa.

Multi-State Scratch Game? Kansas and Iowa Collaborate

The first Midwest Millions series proved to be successful and the two grand prize winner tickets were actually both bought in Iowa. However one of the winners was a Nebraska citizen. As a result of the game success it was decided to run new drawing series starting at April 2008. It was also decided to expand it and allow the participation of other Midwest states.

According to the Kansas Lottery Executive Director the Midwest Millions concept was inspired by the Canadian version of multi-provincial scratch cards. The Midwest Millions is the first game after the Powerball to be issued as a multi-jurisdictional game. As such, it allows the creation of larger grand prizes and higher winning chances. This model proves to be appealing to lottery players, willing to invest in order to have the chance for winning large sums of money.
