About the State of Illinois

The state of Illinois is the 21st state to be admitted to the United States of America. The state is also the most demographically and populous of Midwestern states and is the fifth most populous state in the nation. Illinois has become a huge economic base due to the states natural resources that include timber, coal and petroleum, as well as the city of Chicago strategically located in the northeastern part of the state and small industrialized and agricultural cities in the central and western part of the state.

The state of Illinois is a vital hub for transportation as it connects the Great Lakes to the Mississippi River at the Port of Chicago via the Illinois River. According to an Associated Press analysis using 21 demographic factors, the state of Illinois was found to be the most average state. That same study also suggested that Peoria is a proverbial social and cultural bellwether.

Around 1300 AD, the Mississippian city of Cahokia had a population between 30,000 and 40,000, which is now considered southern Illinois. At that time, the city was the largest within the future United States. New York City would later surpass the City between 1790 and 1800. During the American Revolution, around 2,000 Native American hunters, as well as a small amount of French villagers occupied this Illinois area.

In 1810, American settlers began arriving from Kentucky and later achieved statehood in 1818. The city of Chicago was later founded in the 1830's at the Chicago River banks, making it one of the few natural harbors on Southern Lake Michigan. Farmers from Germany and Sweden were attracted to this state thanks to the railroads and the invention of the self-scouring steel plow by John Deere. These machines would turn the prairies of Illinois into some of the world's most valuable farmland.

By the 1900's, many immigrants from Southern and Eastern Europe came to this state due to the growth of the cities in the north and the coal mining in the central and southern parts of the state. These immigrants were vital during the World Wars. The city's famous jazz and blues culture was created by the African Americans who were migrating to Chicago from the rural south forming a large community.
