Greece Lottery – Lotto 649 – Overview

Lotto 649, the Greek Lottery is a traditional game where players need to match 6 numbers out of 49. Each of the six numbers is from 1 to 49, no duplicates are allowed. A player matching all 6 numbers correctly is entitled to win the Jackpot. If no player succeeded in matching all numbers correctly, the jackpot is rolled over to the next draw. Such series of rollovers can cause the jackpot to increase dramatically. The Greek Lottery firm posed no limitations on how many times the rollovers can happen. The game is played until someone wins the jackpot. A game costs in Greece 0.5 euro per game. A player may choose his own numbers but may also allow the random number generator machine choose the numbers for him.

Lotto 649 was launched in Greece on December 5th 1990 by OPAP. The game remained untouched until January 26th, 2009, where it was changed radically. It is played twice per week, on Wednesday and Saturday, and is broadcasted live on TV. Starting from January 2009 new prize categories were introduced and now there are 5 prize categories in total. Most important is the second prize category that was added and has a 50,000 Euro value. A new number was added, an "Additional Number" being drawn from the same pool of numbers. This number is important, as it is crucial for the second place prize. Player guessing 5 main numbers plus the "Additional Number" is entitled to win the second place prize.

What Are The Odds?

The Greek Lottery is considered to be one of the most difficult lotteries to win among the European countries and maybe also worldwide. However a player can win money in one of the 5 possible prize categories. In order to win the first prize category, or commonly know as the jackpot, the player has to beat the odds of 1:13,980,000. In the second prize category the odds are slightly better and stand at 1:2,330,000. The probability to match 5 main numbers and win the 3rd place is 1: 54,201. By matching 4 numbers the odds to win the 4th place prize sink to 1:1,032. In the last category, the 5th place is won by matching 3 numbers against odds of 1:57.
