Veikkaus - Finnish lotto

History of the Game

Tippaustoimisto Oy AB was established in July 1940 by the Football Association of Finland together with the Finnish Worker's Sports Federation and initially sold only sports betting. In 1971 the first lottery game was launched and the agency changed its name to Veikkaus. The first lottery game launched was "Constant". Since 1975 the Finnish government has total control over Veikkaus and is the only authority allowed to issue any gambling licensed games. The ministry of Education operates Veikkaus however the ministry of internal affairs does the supervision over the games and the determination of game rules.

Veikkaus has a place of honor and tradition in Finland with almost 70 years of activity and more then 70% of the adult population participating in Veikkaus Lotto. The revenues from lottery can reach as much as 1.1 million euro per day and all profits are transferred to the government (as the sole owner of the Veikkaus), which then will transfer the money to be used by different projects around the nation.

Finland Veikkaus Lotto – Overview

Veikkaus operates more then 20 games including Keno, Jokeripelit, Veikkausbingo, various instant scratch cards, sports betting, pool games and the pan-Scandinavian Viking Lotto. However, the flagship of Veikkaus is no doubt Veikkaus Lotto.

On January 3rd, 1971 the first Veikkaus Lotto draw took place. It soon became a success and up to date is the most popular lottery game in Finland. It is a traditional 7 out of 39 matrix lotto game. Veikkaus Lotto players choose 7 numbers each ranging from 1 to 39 and only players that matched correctly all the 7 numbers are entitled to win the Veikkaus Lotto jackpot.

The lottery jackpot is guaranteed to be a minimum of 700,000 million euro and can rapidly grow to big sums of money. Every time the first prize is not won it is pooled to the next lottery draw. However it doesn't continue until the first prize is won but rather is stopped after 5 consecutive draws. On the last draw if still no player matched the 7 numbers the money will be distributed downwards to the winners of the secondary prize.
