Colorado Lottery

The lottery of the state of Colorado is a member of the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL) and is run by the state government. The Colorado Lottery began on January 24, with the first drawing taking place on April 23, 1983. It is headquartered in Pueblo, Colorado with additional offices in Fort Collins, Denver and Grand Junction.

The Colorado Lottery was enacted under the Colorado Revised Statute 24-35-201 from 1982, which outlines all powers, duties and responsibilities. Any and all changed to the lottery statute needs to be done through a legislative act. There is also a five-member lottery commission that oversees the lottery's operations. The members are appointed by the state governor.

Beginning in July 2008, the Colorado Lottery offered 3 online games which includes the Colorado Lotto, Powerball, Perfecto Games, various scratch off tickets and Cash 5 (that has a 5-of-32 matrix). The first Colorado scratch off ticket was sold was in January 1983. The Lotto began in January 1989, Keno began in September 1991, Cash 5 in September 1996 and Perfecto in April 1998.

Although the Colorado Lottery has been around since the early '80's, it has fewer online games than the majority of U.S. lotteries. In addition, Powerball was not accessible until 2001. Currently in the works is a traditional Pick 3 numbers game.

Colorado's lottery has a state of the art computer operation, with computers monitoring over 2,700 retailers. This covers over 100,000 daily ticket validations, making it the largest computer network in the entire state.

The Colorado Lottery has several recipients of its proceeds which include the Conservation Trust Fund (local parks and recreation), the Colorado Division of Parks and Outdoor Recreation (state parks), the Great Outdoors Colorado Trust Fund (wildlife, open space, parks and recreation and environmental education programs), and the Capital Constructions Fund (public buildings).

The State of Colorado

Colorado became a member of the Union in 1876 and is commonly referred to as the Centennial State. This state is a part of the Rocky Mountain region, which is also considered to be associated with the Southwestern and Western regions of the United States. Colorado is bordered by Wyoming to the north, Arizona to the southwest, Nebraska and Kansas to the east, Utah to the west, and New Mexico and Oklahoma to the south. The state's capital and largest city is the city of Denver.

The state is famous for its beautiful rivers, plains and mountain views. In 2008, the U.S. Census estimated the Colorado population at 4.9 million, which reflected a 14% increase since the last conducted census in 2000. Colorado residents are referred to as Coloradans and also by an old-fashioned term of Coloradoan.
