The Lotteries in Canada

There are two major lotteries that operate in Canada, these include Lotto Super 7, which is scheduled to be replaced with Lotto Max in September 2009; in addition there is the Lotto 6/49. In 1970, the first lottery in Canada was started in Quebec and was known as Inter-Lotto.

The Interprovincial Lottery is a combination of five different regional lotteries that oversees both the Lotto Super 7, and the Lotto 6/49. Included in these five regional lottery commissions is Loto-Québec, the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation, the Atlantic Lottery Corporation, British Columbia Lottery Corpo ration, and the Western Canada Lottery Corporation. All of these five lottery commissions are owned and operated by provincial and territorial governments.

Canada’s Lottery History

In 1976 the provincial lottery organizations established the Interprovincial Lottery Corporation with the purpose of creating an organization with the capability of overseeing all the lottery games across Canada. The ILC is owned by the five different lottery commissions and has its headquarters in Toronto Ontario.

Each lottery commission is responsible for marketing the lottery games that are within that commission’s jurisdiction. All the revenue that is generated from the online lotteries is returned to the providences according the providence’s sales.

Canada’s tax laws on lottery winnings are somewhat different, and frequently it is not necessary to pay taxes on winning immediately upon claiming those winnings.
