Belgium Lottery

It is possible to trace the Belgian lottery back to May 29th 1934 and with the first draw happening on October 18th the same year. The government approved the selling of lottery tickets by the Colonial Lottery Organization. The government wanted to raise money as means of support to the Homeland Welfare of Congo and so it was decided to use the revenues from lottery as the finance support of the Colonial Treasury. As a result the Colonial Lottery changed its name on June 30, 1960 to African Lottery. On December 10th, 1962 the Loterie Nationale was founded, is managed by the Ministry of Finance. The state is the single stockholder. As the single owner of the Loterie Nationale, the government approved in 1976 the use of not only ticket lotteries but also number drawn lotteries. Since that authorization by the Finance ministry until today more games were added and now include Joker, Keno, Pick 3, Win for Life, EuroMillions and the crown jewel of Loterie Nationale the lotto game.

Belgium Lotto games

Loterie Nationale most played game is Lotto, it was launched in 1978 and the first draw was on February 4th. Currently the game is a biweekly game with draws on Wednesday and Saturday. The game is a 6 out of 42 numbers. Matching the six numbers correctly will award the first prize jackpot. The game guarantees a minimum of 1 million Euros for the jackpot and often the sum grows very rapidly. In case no player won the jackpot on Wednesday, the sum will be pooled into the next Wednesday lotto game, the same goes for the Saturday jackpot, it is transferred to the next Saturday draw. That makes the Loterie Nationale very unique among the other European lotteries.

Playing the Game

Loterie Nationale has a 6 by 42 matrix, meaning the players choose 6 numbers from 1 to 42, no duplicates are allowed. The player is required for a 2 game minimum costing 1 Euro. Each additional double game costs an additional Euro. Players matching the 6 digits are entitled for the first prize. Any player can choose from 4 additional optional lottery aids. Each of the Add-ons increases the players' chance in winning a number of additional prizes. The add-ons to the Belgian lottery are available on both draws, Wednesday and Saturday.

Similarly to the other European lotteries a player can choose to select the numbers on his own or use the "QuickPick" option. The "QuickPick" is a machine choosing the numbers randomly and printing them on an extra ticket. The system is used not only in Europe and the UK (it is called "Lucky Dip") but in many of the US lotteries. The "QuickPick" is also available for some other lottery games played in Belgium.
