Australian Lotteries


In Australia the lottery consists of a variety of products that are licensed by Australian lottery companies. The companies that operate the lotteries in Australia include those companies that are owned by the government, as well as private companies. These sponsors must be licensed by a state or territory.

Since August of 2008 the major lottery sponsors in Australia include,

  • Corporations that are owned by the state government; these include Lotterywest, operating in Western Australia, the New South Wales lotteries, as well as the ACT, South Australian Lotteries.
  • Tatts Group Limited; this company operates the Tattersall`s Lotteries in Tasmania, the Australian Capital Territory, Victoria, and they also operate under the brand Queensland`s Golden Casket Lottery Corporation in the Northern Territory. The Golden Casket Lottery Corporation was under the control of the Queensland government until 2007 when the Tatts Group took it over.
  • Intralot Australia, which operates in Victoria and Tasmania.

State governments operate most of the online lotteries in Australia, but there are several lottery games that are sponsored by the Australian National Government. Today, Tattersall alongside the state run lotteries, operates as a bloc to for the national games. Both the entries and the winnings are pooled.

The major lottery companies market the lottery games that traditionally operate in their area, but in recent times many of these games have become multi-state or national lotteries.

The lottery games in Australia are regulated by a variety of laws, but these laws do vary from state to state. For example, you can only buy lottery products if you are over the age of 16 or 18, depending on the state the lottery is in.

In August 2008, the Prime Minister Kevin Rudd announced at a homecoming ceremony for Australian Olympic athletes that he was considering using the proceeds from a national lottery as a means of funding Australian Olympic sports.
