Atlantic Lottery Corporation

History

On September 3rd, 1976 Atlantic Lottery Corporation (ALC) was founded by the 4 Atlantic provinces of Canada: Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick.

ALC based its headquarters in New Brunswick. The revenues made by ALC finance the general projects of the different provinces. At first were the games played only regionally but gradually they expanded to inter-provincial and finally to national draws.

ALC History

The creation of ALC was followed by the formations of other joined governmental lotteries around Canada. Since its launce in 1976 ALC made a 5.9 Billion Dollar earnings to its stockholders and delivered 5.5 Billion Dollars to its winners.

Although ALC initially offered only one lottery game, many considered it as a leader in Lottery developing technology. ALC was the innovator of printing barcodes on all lottery tickets and scratch cards. This invention was adopted all over the world as it assisted in quick verification of winning cards. ALC was also the first Canadian company to legalize the video lottery machines in 1990.

2004 was also an innovating year for ALC; players were permitted to use the Internet in order to play the lottery, it was named PlaySphere. 2007 was the year ALC was honored as one of the top 100 Employers in Canada. Atlantic Lottery Corporation is the only one among its equivalents to ever accept this title.

Games and products

When ALC was launched it had only one lottery game. However, since then ALC markets a diverse group of games. In June 1982 the game Lotto 6/49 was launched with biweekly drawings on Wednesday and Saturday. The game became national within one and half years.

In May 1988 the add-on Tag was added to Lotto 6/49. Tag is an additional 6-digit number drawn in conjunction to the 6/49 game. Keno Atlantic was launched in October 1989. It was first known as Atlantic choice (the renaming occurred in October 2001).

The game offered the players a daily draw as well as more prizes and new winning alternatives. Lotto Super 7 was launched in May 1994 with a weekly draw on Friday. The game was replaced in September 2009 with Lotto Max. Atlantic 6/49 was initiated in November 2002 and in June 2004 was renamed to Atlantic 49. The jackpot for this game is always 10,000,000. The game can be played on its own or together with Lotto 6/49.

A ticket is a computer-generated card with 2 sets of 6 numbers. Other additional games that were issued like Pick 4, a small scale Keno for the drawn numbers of Lotto 6/49 or Bucko, a daily game with a jackpot of 10,000,000, for playing 3 lines simultaneously or Atlantic Payday, a 4 out of 70 numbers game with an annuities 10,000,000 jackpot.

ALC is not only a lottery company but it also commercializes Canadian sports betting such as: Pro-Line, Over-Under, Props, Pools and Spreads. Other products include the Internet based game PlaySphere, Scratch cards (Scratch-n-Win), Pull-tabs (Breakopen) and video lottery terminals. In Prince Edward Island the Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at Charlottetown Driving Park as well as Red Shores Summerside Raceway are all ALC owned.
