Arizona Lottery
The Arizona Lottery is a member of the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL). The lottery is operated by the state government of Arizona. The state requires that all participating lottery players be at least 21 years of age, which was changed from 18 years of age on June 1, 2003.
The state's lottery games include Pick 3, Pick 5, Powerball, 2by2 (which is not a MUSL game), Cash 4 (which has unique game characteristics) and finally The Pick.
The state of Arizona allows its residents to vote on whether the lottery games shall continue to be operated.
Arizona Lottery History
The Arizona Lottery was created in November of 1980 by a public initiative vote and was the first state to have a state-run lottery amongst all of the states west of the Mississippi. The lottery came into existence by a slim-margin vote which was 51 to 49. However, future referendum votes reflected growing public support.
Sixty-eight percent of state voters approved the lottery for an additional 5 years in November 1997. In November 2002, 73% of voters chose to extend the operations for 10 years. As of 2002, the voters decided to support Proposition 301 which extends all lottery games to July 1, 2012. Any winning ticket holders will be able to redeem their prizes until January 1, 2013. State voters will again have the chance to decide on the future of lottery games in 2011, which is a general election year.
Lottery tickets began selling on July 1, 1981 with a Scratch It Rich instant game that cost . The tickets were sold out in 10 days time when 21.4 million had been purchased by lottery players. This particular game was the sole lottery product offered until 1984. It was at this time that the Arizona Lottery rolled out their first online game known as The Pick. This game was immediately popular and actual sales reached .4 million in its first year. Additional games that were added included Fantasy 5 in 1991, the Powerball in 1994 and Pick 3 in 1998.
The Arizona Lottery has earned more than .5 million in revenue since it first began. This has resulted in .8 billion in net revenue for the state. Lottery sales have been consistently reaching 5 million dollars for seven consecutive years. In FY05, it set a record sales of 7.5 million and 6 million was allocated to the state.
