There’s a group of bakery workers all employees or former employees at a Chicago Heights bakery who copped the $118 MILLION jackpot in the Mega Millions draw on May 4th. On Wednesday just gone, twelve of the group turned up at the Illinois Lottery offices to cash their winning ticket only to be told that the payout is being withheld. OMG!
The problem seems to have its roots buried in the structure and set up of the original syndicate which was at least 17 members strong. According to the grapevine the “agreement” was that if the pool won a small prize they would simply re-invest the amount won in tickets for the next draw. Well the good news is – it appears that they did win a couple of bucks a few days before and re-invested and it was one of the re-investment tickets that hit the $118 MILLION first prize! The bad news – it would appear that five members of the original pool are being cut out of their share in the jackpot so the matter has now been referred to the Courts.
Apparently some of the winners already quit their jobs just days after hitting the jackpot, but Wednesday’s decision to withhold the payout means nobody will collect until a judge gives a ruling, which could take years. Which is OK, I guess providing nobody actually “kneads the dough” right now! (Other puns are available!)
On the other hand the twelve claiming bakery workers could opt to put equal shares of the winnings including the five “outcasts” in an escrow account, which means they would get their hands on their share of the loot during litigation or they could just agree to split the money 17 ways right now, avoid an expensive court case and a settle for a little less icing on the cake.
