There are two women called Sharon – Sharon Duncan and Sharon Jones, who were recently in a convenience store in Beebe, a city about 40 miles northeast of Little Rock, Arkansas and are now embroiled in a legal contretemps about the ownership of a lottery ticket worth $1 MILLION.
The court case which was heard in Searcy, Ark. has now been ongoing for some time and reached its conclusion yesterday when the judge gave his final ruling. It appears that Sharon number one – Sharon Duncan had a lottery ticket which she asked the store assistant to check, but after the read-out on the ticket scanner said, “Sorry. Not a winner,” she threw the ticket into a nearby trash can.
Enter Sharon number two – Sharon Jones who, according to her own court testimony, then gathered a handful of discarded tickets from the same trash can, which she had done many times before. Sharon number two then checked through the bunch of discarded tickets and discovered that one of them was in fact a winner, and went on to cash the winning ticket worth a $1 MILLION.
Sharon number one gets wind of the shenanigans, claims ownership of her discarded ticket, appoints attorneys, and the whole thing now needs a court hearing to finally settle who owns what. Well yesterday White County Judge, Thomas Hughes, after hearing argument from Sharon one’s attorney that she simply made a mistake by throwing away the $1 MILLION ticket, ruled that Jones (Sharon Two) never met the burden of proof that Duncan (Sharon One) had abandoned her right to claim the ONE MILLION dollar prize and Sharon Duncan was entitled to the prize money.
