Maureen Holt, age 77, and her 80 year husband Fred live in Oldham, Greater Manchester. Well a couple of weeks ago they bought a EuroMillions lottery ticket for the Friday June, 22, draw, at the Tesco Extra store in Huddersfield Road, Oldham. The Holt’s then promptly took themselves off to Spain for a holiday, which meant they didn’t get around to checking their EuroMillions ticket until they got back home.

The other day whilst Maureen was out shopping she nipped into the Best One Convenience Store in Watersheddings Street, Oldham and asked the shop assistant to check her EuroMillions ticket; he duly scanned the ticket into Camelot’s lottery machine and then told Maureen Holt that she’d won nothing, nix, nada, and her ticket was worthless!

What the shop assistant didn’t tell Maureen was the fact that Camelot’s lottery machine had, in reality, immediately confirmed that the numbers on Maureen’s ticket precisely matched those drawn in the EuroMillions Millionaire’s raffle and the ticket was actually worth ONE MILLION pounds (US$1,500,000)! Now that’s a bit naughty!

The 30 year old shop assistant, who had apparently known Mrs Holt for a year, then used her stolen ticket and made an attempt to claim the ONE MILLION pounds for himself. But the scam unravelled when checks made by lottery operator Camelot revealed the winning ticket was in fact bought at the Tesco Extra in Oldham, where Mrs Holt had used her Clubcard, and not the Best One Convenience Store in Watersheddings Street where the dastardly assistant worked.

The shop involved has now been suspended by Camelot from selling National Lottery tickets, pending an internal investigation and the assistant who, by the way is nicknamed “Lucky,” has now admitted a charge of fraud by false representation and will be sentenced at Manchester Minshull Crown Court on August 20.
